A warm, witty comedy about books, wine, and the messiness of middle-aged life.
When one book club discovers a scandalous new novel hits close to home, friendship, fantasy, and fiction hilariously collide. Smart, sharp, full of heart, and a touch of magic phallus.
Four middle-aged friends meet for their long-running book club, where wine flows and banter flies. Their reading list ranges from trashy self-help books to ancient tea manuals, and each new book sparks discussions that explore the messy truths of their lives. Alison, Noni, Margot, and Helen navigate aging bodies, stalled ambitions, buried resentments, and rekindled desires—nothing is off-limits. Then there’s Roger—the one lover they all have in common—who serves as both a running joke and a mirror as they compare notes on love and lust.
But when a new book choice—a bodice-ripper about a literally enchanted penis—hits close to home, the line between fiction and reality blurs, spinning their misadventures into a layered meta-mystery. It’s a sharp, big-hearted romp that marries domestic realism with absurd fantasy, filled with big laughs and heartfelt truths. This brand new play is a warm, witty celebration of female friendship and desire. Perfect for audiences who love smart comedies with heart.

Jodie O'Regan
PERFORMER/WRITER
This is the second play I've ever written. My first one was in 1988. I feel quite vulnerable about it. An "upstart crone". But it's this very dynamic of middle aged restlessness that I wanted to explore in the play. Something does happen to us as we age. We develop a sense of finitude, of urgency and that leads to a certain reckless creativity. My main work is as a composer and librettist. I went to acting class after realising that studying acting technique would be incredibly useful in developing my text setting in my vocal writing. I didn’t set out to write a play, I just started jamming the main monologues for the play during my late night drives home from acting class.

Erin McAlister
PERFORMER
I have always loved performing and acting and it was all I wanted to do when I was younger. My parents encouraged me to find a more stable career so I did. But that’s always been my deepest dream and so once my kids were big enough to not need me home every night, I decided to go out and find a way to do it. I absolutely love the play and the way it looks at women’s lives and how there is a deep touch of sadness and melancholy to it, and how we miss the chance to do “the thing”. But then also the silliness and hope that comes with finding a new way to get there. I try to live by the motto “if not now, when?” So I decided to just go for the acting class, and met Tony.
