The Weir

Six glasses of beer placed on a round wooden table, with event details about a book titled 'The Weir' by Conor McPherson, happening November 3rd to 22nd.

Our season will close in November with what will be (very surprisingly) the South Australian premiere of Conor McPhersons’ Olivier winning masterpiece ‘The Weir’.

On a remote stretch of rural Ireland, where the wind prowls across the fields and the night seems to lean in close to listen, there’s a little pub that stands as a kind of refuge. A battered wooden door, a few familiar barstools, and the uneasy sense that in a place this quiet… something else might be keeping watch.

Connor McPherson’s ‘The Weir’ draws us into that pub on a storm-soaked evening—a night when the locals gather not just for company but for the comfort of telling stories. Harmless tales at first. Folk legends. Ghost whispers. The sort of stories you tell to push back the dark.

But as the pints settle and the fire flickers, the stories grow stranger… sharper… and the room seems to hold its breath. Because in ‘The Weir’, the supernatural isn’t the point—it’s the shadow that reveals the deeper hauntings we carry inside ourselves.

It’s no accident that ‘The Weir’ was named among Michael Billington’s 101 greatest plays list. It’s a work that doesn’t shout. It hums—with mystery, with humanity, with the quiet terror of being truly seen.

This is a play where loneliness finds its voice, where the past knocks softly on the door, and where a single unexpected visitor can turn an ordinary night into something unforgettable.

‘The Weir’ doesn’t try to frighten you.

It simply invites you to sit down, listen…

And discover how a simple story can open a door you didn’t realise was there.
