She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith
Burnside Players' first production for 2010 will be Oliver Goldsmith's 'She Stoops to Conquer', an 18th century comedy, directed by Damien White. In order to woo Charles Marlow, the son of a wealthy aristocrat, Miss Kate Hardcastle is forced into a plan which sees her posing as a barmaid. Add to this a practical joke played on Marlow and his friend Hastings, in which they are lead to believe that Kate's family house is an inn and her wealthy father the innkeeper, and numerous romantic subplots, all interspersed with the usual interference of the older members of the family, and hilarity ensues. TEACHERS Anthony Hayes, Daniel Krige, Kirsty McGregor
DAY ONE 10 am – 5 pm.Day one, your teachers Tony and Daniel will take you from script to audition. Working intensely with each teacher for half a day, you will learn how to interpret a scene, build a character and how to walk into an audition room being fully prepared and with absolute confidence. Your teachers have experience as actors AND directors, so know the best ways to calm down those audition nerves and also can guide you on what a director is looking for. By the end of the day you will take away a scene to prepare on your day ‘off’, using the techniques you have learned with Tony and Daniel. You will then ‘audition’ with Kirsty McGregor on day two of the course. DAY TWO. 10am - 5pmAt the beginning of day two, Kirsty McGregor will conduct a seminar for approx 1 hour, during which time you will have the opportunity to grill her with any questions about the casting process. You will then be taken through the audition process during which you will perform your scene prepared on your day off. Kirsty will offer feedback and direction and you will do the scene once, perhaps twice more (depending on how well you nail it!). The class will all be present during the audition process as we find you will learn as much from watching other people audition as you do during your time in front of the camera. SELF TESTING Kirsty will also talk to you about how to prepare and audition when you do not have the opportunity to be in the room with the casting director – whether it be because you have not been invited OR because you are interstate or overseas. At the end of the day, there will be a half hour re-cap, during which you can ask any still-lingering questions. The Mintons are one of Adelaide's newest, yet tightest, most talented Jazz and Soul ensembles. Demonstrating a passion for Jazz and Soul, and a quality of Jazz appreciation and technique beyond their years, The Mintons are more than "Adelaide's most promising Jazz and Soul ensemble:" they fulfil that promise with every performance. Giovanni Clemente delivers exquisite clean and, with equal ease, artfully raw notes on the Alto Sax... Jeffery Tabe, on Double Bass, keeps up a compelling groove, and Chris Neil, on Drums, keeps everyone's toes tapping... On Guitar, Luke "Cherry" Ciaramella demonstrates a rare mastery of his instrument, especially for one so young... All four have shared the stage with world renowned artists including Don Burrows, James Morrison and Art Baron, and are influenced by the likes of John McLaughlin, Paul Desmond, Miles Davis and Paul Chambers. As well as Jazz Standards, The Mintons play original compositions which reflect the wealth and diversity of their Jazz and Soul influences. $10 entry and all door money goes to artists, so come on down and help support Adelaide's budding musicians! Spotlight Theatre Company Inc is proud to present the intriguing play Folly Bridge by Kelvin Butcher during October 2009 in The Arch at Holden Street Theatres. What sort of a relationship was evolving when Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the mathematics lecturer at Oxford University, took the three young Liddell girls, the daughters of Canon Liddell of Christ Church, on boating excursions and picnics along the Thames and then invited them to his rooms to take tea and dress up for photographs? Could it be that the creation of Alice in Wonderland by Dodgson, writing as Lewis Carroll, was an attempt to preserve the fond memories of those happy days when his attraction to Alice Liddell may have been a little more than mere friendship? These are the intriguing questions explored by South Australian playwright Kelvin Butcher in his fascinating play Folly Bridge to be presented by Spotlight Theatre at the Holden Street Theatres in October. In following the lives of Alice in her later years; Alice as a young woman, and Alice as a child; the play provides insights into the latent possibilities of her relationship with Dodgson. By cleverly introducing fictional characters from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, the writer moves the play towards a climatic trial scene when Dodgson is called to account for his alleged actions by the Red King and his court. The comedic interpretations of the roles of the fictional characters relieve the dramatic tension but at the same time provide an effective device for highlighting the underlying seriousness of the play. For this is a serious play that touches on the sensitive question of relationships between adults and children. Warning: This play is not recommended for children of Primary School age. It contains adult concepts and some strong language. Preview: Thursday 1 October at 8 pm. Friday & Saturday, 2nd & 3rd, 9th & 10th October at 8 pm. Matinee: Saturday 3rd at 2 pm Bookings via Venue*tix on 8225 8888 or via Spotlight Theatre Company 0400 579 530 The Sunday Club at Holden Street!
