Terry Johnson’s biting sexual comedy comes to Adelaide

In California in the early '60s, we meet Benjamin Braddock (Quadrio) who has just finished college. Back at his parents' house, he's trying to avoid the one question everyone keeps asking: What does he want to do with his life? An unexpected diversion crops up when he is seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Martin), a bored housewife and friend of his parents. But what begins as a fun tryst turns complicated when Benjamin falls for the one woman Mrs. Robinson demanded he stay away from, her daughter, Elaine (Tulip).

Terry Johnson’s stage adaptation of The Graduate, based on the novel and the iconic 1967 film, is a hilarious, bitterly dark comedy, full of rapid-fire dialogue between fascinating yet horrifying characters.

Producer/Director Matt Byrne said The Graduate was

“as powerful and sexy as the day it first slipped between the sheets.

It explores family dysfunction, parental expectations, crumbling marriages, and the naive, yet disillusioned, dichotomy of youth, against the shiny backdrop of affluent Southern California in the 1960's.

Naive Benjamin Braddock is fresh out of University without a future in sight, when he is seduced by the alcoholic, unhappily married and sexually short-changed Mrs. Robinson.

The script hasn’t aged a day. It is poignant, sharp, witty and incredibly biting as Mrs. Robinson manipulates sex from Benjamin.

She has only one rule: don’t date my daughter. But Benjamin quickly decides that is exactly what he will do!”

The Oscar-winning movie version launched Dustin Hoffman as a major star, opposite Anne Bancroft as the original "cougar" Mrs. Robinson, and Simon And Garfunkel’s accompanying hit song, 'Mrs. Robinson' defined a disillusioned generation. The stage version starred Kathleen Turner in London and Jerry Hall in Melbourne … now the scandalous story of a calculating older woman targeting a naive younger man comes to Adelaide, starring Niki Martin as Mrs. Robinson, opposite Nathan Quadrio as Benjamin. Hannah Tulip plays Elaine Robinson, Matt Byrne plays Mr. Robinson, Timothy Cousins plays Mr. Braddock and Heather Riley plays Mrs. Braddock. The show will also feature Adam D’Apice as the Psychiatrist, the Hotel Clerk and The Priest, and Kristen Tommasini as the burlesque dancer.
