About the show

As part of the brand new dance program at Holden Street, 'Castles' is the second of House of Sand's performances in the 2018 Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Talented actress, singer, dancer, and master of the cross-artform Eliza Sanders throws her all into this archetypal journey of discovery. How do we create castles for ourselves, to protect and comfort us? Are they built of brick and mortar, or something more ethereal? Sanders creates a hive of interconnected musings on the subject in this moving and unique performance.

Recipient of the 2018 Adelaide Fringe Artist Fund, 'Castles' uses text, song, theatre, costume, and dance in a stream-of-consciousness performance unlike anything you've ever seen.

'Castles' can be seen as a solo piece, or in conjunction with House of Sand's other production, 'Pedal'.

Praise for 'Castles' at 2018 Adelaide Fringe

★★★★1/2 'Castles is stunning, confusing, and jarring - a bit like the last two years of the world. It’s unique and nothing like anything else you’ll see' - This is Radelaide

★★★★ 'It is quite the surprise and it really should be seen.' - The Barefoot Review

★★★★ 'It is an uncompromising work, at times a full-on sensory assault, with a stream of consciousness spoken narrative — a striking contrast to the tightly wrought choreography and very impressive execution.' - The Advertiser

★★★★ 'Castles is entertaining, a spectacle of words, ideas, sensations, colour and the audience is invited to make its own cognitive leaps in terms of meaning.' - The Clothesline

★★★★★ 'The audience must piece together their own truth, which is a process that can be ultimately more powerful than any other.' - Scenestr

★★★★1/2 'Be swept away on this unpredictable journey through the inner workings of mind. An absolutely outstanding piece.' - All Over Adelaide

"Eliza is a tour-de-force on stage." - Dance Aotearoa

Adelaide Fringe 2018 News

'Eliza finds a-logical, illogical and semi-logical connections between ideas and memories— a hive of strangely interconnected questions and musings — from the silly to the sublime.' - GLAM Adelaide

'Hidden in this absurdist cabaret is a wash of vulnerability. You can see this woman is searching for something and not finding it. We don't know what “it” is, but it sure is fun to watch her look for it.' - Theatreview NZ

'Eliza Sanders is an astonishingly talented performer, of that there can be no doubt.' - The Adelaide Review
