2010 ADELAIDE FRINGE REVIEWS

***1/2 3.5STARS

THE ADVERTISER - Samela Harris.

ONE of the puzzles of the Fringe is why a company calls itself "No Exit", which is the name of the play it is presenting and renames the play 1 Camera, which, perhaps should be "In Camera", the translation of play's French name Huis Clos, with the meaning of "behind closed doors".

The other odd thing is that at no point in the credits does the company mention the author of this famous existential piece is Jean Paul Sartre.

It is uphill after that. Chris Anderson has a particular olde-world look and demeanour which he carries well to establish the character of Garcin, the American army deserter who is the first to arrive in the windowless somewhere/nowhere room.

After being joined by embittered lesbian postal worker Inez and vapid socialite Estelle, he realises the "hell is other people". Kyla Booth is very threatening as the lesbian but needs direction on her delivery.

Carla Conlin is dazzling in her emerald taffeta ballgown - and is a young actress to watch.
