HISTORY
Holden Street was designed and refurbished in 2002 by Martha Lott with the vision to establish a second tier professional production house and create more work in theatre in South Australia, the support of Weslo Holdings Pty Ltd made this possible.
Since then we have experienced virtually exponential growth in both productivity and development. Here's a brief history of the main achiements since we started.
2009

• Nominated Adelaide Fringe Award Best Performance Venue 2009
ADELAIDE FRINGE 2009 SHOWS
Holden Street housed 13.25% of theatre, 14.20% of Dance and .9% of music in the Fringe program. We had 150 individual performances by 13 companies and welcomed over 6750 patrons through our doors, a 25% increase on last year.

  • Directors’ Choice 2009
    • Only one show was presented in 2009 which was Scarborough by Fiona Evans directed by Martha Lott. The second production The Maids was cancelled by the Director as they were not successful in receiving Arts SA funding.
    HOLDEN STREET THEATRES OVERSEAS
  • The Edinburgh Fringe:
    • This is the Second year of the Holden Street Theatres Edinburgh Award offering a tour to Holden Street to headline the Fringe program in the following year.
    • The Award went to Heroin(e) for Breakfast; a fast paced new work by an up and coming UK company.
    • Judges were Paul Lucas – Paul Lucas productions NYC, Richard Jordan – Theatre Royal Haymarket & Richard Jordan Productions, Marc Frankum – Sarah Bird Casting London and over 20 Press, Patrons, producers and Venue Staff who gave us their hot picks lists.
    • This year we had companies approach us wanting us to see the shows where last year we were relatively unknown.
  • London:
    • Holden Street set up a London Office and is establishing contacts for co productions and tours for the future. Currently in the pipeline is a co production with writer Ronnie Dorsey for production in the Edinburgh Fringe 2010 and development of another new work to be work shopped and developed in 2010 at Holden Street for a UK tour in 2011 including Edinburgh Fringe and UK regional theatres.

    HOLDEN STREET THEATRES OVERSEAS
    • In 2008 we established the Holden Street Theatres Edinburgh Award offering a tour to an outstanding production from the Edinburgh Fringe to perform as the headline act for our Fringe season the following year. The Award was accepted for presentation at the prestigious Scotsman Awards at the Assembly Rooms – probably the most highly regards awards ceremony for the Edinburgh Fringe.
    • The inaugural winner was The Tailor of Inverness – Krawiec z Inverness by Matthew Zajac, co presented with Holden Street (for the Adelaide season) by Dogstar Theatre and Directed by Ben Harrison.
    • This production gave local arts workers the opportunity to work with one of Scotland’s most talented and recognised theatre Actors; Matthew Zajac (winner of the Best Actor Award for Scotland 2009 for Tailor of Inverness), with one of Scotland’s preeminent theatre companies Dog Star Theatre and on a production Directed by Ben Harrison (Co-Artistic Director of Award winning Scottish theatre company Grid Iron, past Director of the Dutch theatre company Muztheate, has worked with the National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep, British Council and was the Associate Director of the Almeida Theatre in London) who also came to see the production at Holden Street.

    • Developed relationships with Theatre Tours International and create and opening for them in the Adelaide market
    • Arnold Wesker’s The Mistress Presented by Holden Street Theatres and Theatre Tours International at The Assembly Rooms for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Sir Arnold Wesker came to see the production and we have now created a relationship with Sir Arnold that remains positive and open.
    • Relationships with Producing houses and theatre Companies were formed and new networks created. We brought Richard Jordan of The Theatre Royal Haymarket and Richard Jordan Productions out to Adelaide to advise us on direction and work with us to increase our international profile.
