Performances
August 2 - 27

Never been performed in Edinburgh Fringe… a rare Wesker treat, The Mistress, is a one woman play with an edge.

Samantha is an exotic woman with a guilty secret she can only share with her closest confidantes, Jessica, Babushka and Ninotchka, she is having an affair with a married man…

As she eagerly awaits “his” call, she runs the gamut of emotions, quarrelling, pleading and tormenting her friends for understanding.  The only problem is... they cannot help for they are her mannequins ... She is a famous fashion designer.

As Samantha ponders her lot, she reveals the complex web of self-deceit, real and imagined, in which she has entangled her life treading the hire wire between hopeless justification and mortification.

Penned by one of our greatest living playwrights, Sir Arnold Wesker has created a glorious nugget of comprehension, getting to the core of the complex emotions behind one of our most prolific pastimes… the great British affair!

The Mistress stars the gorgeous, multi award winning Australian actress, Martha Lott, who hails from sunny Adelaide and who also, runs one of its most successful Fringe venues, Holden Street Theatres. This year she directed the award winning What I Heard About Iraq by Simon Levy, and programmed a record breaking Adelaide Fringe season.

Guy Masterson also directs ADOLF, PLAYING BURTON and FOLLOW ME and performs in AMERICAN POODLE and UNDER MILK WOOD.

GUY MASTERSON BACK WITH A VENGEANCE WITH 7 SHOWS, ALL AT ASSEMBLY ROOMS!

As the Edinburgh Fringe breaks the 2000 show barrier it’s heartening to see one of its most prolific, loyal and innovative protagonists continuing to make such a rich and versatile contribution.

As actor, writer or director, Guy Masterson has created twenty-five shows in 13 years ranging from his own groundbreaking solo performances in Under Milk Wood and Animal Farm in ‘94 & ‘95 to the record breaking 12 Angry Men in ‘03 and The Odd Couple in ‘05. 2007 sees him directing 4 and performing in 2.

But it is as an international presenter that he has perhaps most excelled, bringing a further twenty-five to the Fringe over the years including such highlights as Skin Tight, Krishnan’s Dairy and Number Two from New Zealand, and introducing Edinburgh to the seemingly unlimited talents of John Clancy and David Calvitto with Americana Absurdum and then Horse Country & Cincinnati (et al) from New York.

This year is no different: His 2007 programme is, in many ways, a 14th year retrospective as Masterson brings back three of his biggest hits in Josh Richards’ powerful, moving PLAYING BURTON, Pip Utton’s chillingly brilliant ADOLF, and his own legendary UNDER MILK WOOD (for two performances only). Also in the mix are three World Premieres; FOLLOW ME - the story of Albert Pierrepoint and Ruth Ellis featuring Stage Award winner Beth Fitzgerald & Ross Gurney-Randall directed by Masterson; AN AGE OF ANGELS, with Mark Soper directed by Ines Wurth – the fabulously talented team behind the highly successful I Miss Communism; AMERICAN POODLE - a curious and caustic take on the UK\US Special Relationship from opposite sides of the pond. John Clancy directs David Calvitto with words by Brian Parks for the US side of things in “Splayfoot”. Peter McNally directs Masterson for the UK in “Snowball”. Guaranteed laughs.

Finally comes a rare Wesker treat - an “almost” World Premiere - as Masterson directs award winning Australian Martha Lott in Arnold Wesker’s only-once-before performed THE MISTRESS.

Seven brilliant theatrical nuggets on which Edfringe audiences can feast! Another fascinating, varied and challenging program of simply unmissable theatre!
