It's late, there's no bus, you first drove a car at 12, there's a long stretch of highway ahead and just to get home you'll face roos, trucks and cops. HOONS explores the issues and risks associated with young people behind the wheel, sharing stories of risk, frustration and tragedy.

HOONS is a high quality, dynamic “Youth for Youth” performance piece developed by an exciting team of young artists including three writers – Benjamin Noble, Gemma Sneddon and Alysha Herrmann, composer Alex Mitchell and digital artist Nic Tubb with direction and dramaturgy by RYT Artistic Director Julie Waddington.

Developed in partnership with a range of community groups including the Riverland Community Road Safety Group and the South Australian Police, HOONS will tackle the issues that affect young people of driving age in our region. With tougher measures in place to combat road accidents, in particular, the recent introduction of “anti-hoon” laws and strict penalties for drink driving and speeding offences, this project aims to promote the understanding and awareness of road and driver safety.

Young people can often be caught between the values and expectations of family and the wider influences of peers, the media, youth culture and personal inclination. Much of the discussion about youth lifestyle inevitably takes place with a reference to the risks involved, as adolescence is frequently characterised as a time of exploration and risk taking. HOONS will provide a platform for participants and audience to explore how young people balance these factors when making choices behind the wheel and investigate possible solutions to counter risk-taking decisions.
