One air balloon. Contents: one explorer, exceptional. One hamster, obese. One urn, full.
Powerful and poignant, 'An Air Balloon Across Antarctica', tells the story of Caitlin Evans, a female explorer travelling across Antarctica in a hot air balloon to scatter her son’s ashes, accompanied by Ham, a lemming trapped in a hamster’s body. Armed with an identity complex, an addiction to breakfast cereal, and a willingness to accept the surreal, this unlikely duo undertakes a journey across hostile terrain, battling memories and wandering souls in the search for inner peace and the blankest space on earth. Balancing levity and gravity, absurdity and aching realism, 'An Air Balloon Across Antarctica', is a breathtakingly beautiful piece of theatre exploring the edge of the earth and the edges of ourselves.
'An Air Balloon Across Antarctica' premiered in October 2004 as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, enjoying a sell-out season and a positive and enthusiastic response from audience members and theatre critics alike. The production was nominated for a coveted Green Room Award in the category of Outstanding Writing in Melbourne Fringe / Independent Theatre 2004.
In July 2007, the production played to similarly packed houses at the Old Council Chambers, Trades Hall in Melbourne, ahead of a season at the Pleasance Dome as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (August 2007). 'An Air Balloon Across Antarctica' has received 5 star reviews from The Scotsman and Broadway Baby, as well as being nominated for the coveted Fringe First and Carol Tambor awards.
Critical acclaim for An Air Balloon Across Antarctica:
“… a wonderfully imaginative concept that is as touching as it is fresh and funny” - Sally J. Stott, The Scotsman (7th August, 2007)
“You’d have to be a very jaded fringe goer not to be touched by this fresh, talented production. Go see.” - Kathryn Mack, Broadway Baby (2nd August, 2007)
